This Could Be Fun
We know he knows the characters (he's currently writing the comic), we know he can direct character-focused action (because we've seen Buffy, Angel, and Firefly)...
So why not this match?
If there's a straightforward way to improve on the already-excellent X-Men films, this is quite possibly it.

"We are normal and we dig Joss Whedon" ...
Has he done any other movies?
While I think I'd like any movie he'd do, one of the things I appreciate more and more about him is his handling of multi-episode fiction and the way he makes it a comfortable experience.
I finally got the Firefly DVD set, and I like the way traditional sitcom elements are mixed in (with the traditional western TV elements that have me going, "Didn't I see this handled on Maverick when I was a little kid?")
Angel was the last TV series that I had a "Wednesday night is Angel night" feeling about, including looking forward to seeing other fans' LJ remarks afterward. Movies aren't quite the same, tho I certainly support the notion of Whedon making tons of money.

Joss hasn't directed for the big screen before, but he's known for some of his movie script-doctoring, particularly for _Toy Story_.
I'd rather he was doing regular series work, but something is far, far better than nothing.

I still wanna see him do Troilus and Cressida. Complex staging, bickering, sarcasm, character assassination ...
